Abstract

Orhan Veli has translated thirtyfive poems from French into Turkish under his own name. He also co-translated four poems. Twenty eight of his poems were published between. 1945-1949, and twlve after his death in various journals.. In this study where Kemal Özmen investigates the trasnlatability fo poetry, emphasis is on the fact that translation serves as a bridge between Turkish and French poetry through the establishment of a new view of poetry inserted into the target culture through this type of transmission. Özmen, draws our attention to the fact that through his ‘style’ and his ‘attitude’ Orhan Veli through a comon soulfulness and empathy seems to feel an affinity for the poetry he translates and the poets of the original. some instances of these are: the fluidness of expression, natural expressions, sincerity, plainness, irony, love of life, fulfillment, small things making one happy, the fact that very common and daily things find there place in the poems and the like. Özmen, states that Orhan Veli trasnlates in the way he composes his own poetry.. It can also be said that there are traces of his translations in his own works. Thus, the translations by Orhan Veli, on the one hand enhance the aesthetic of poetry and feed poetic creativity and on the other hand present interesting examples for Turkish poetry in search of a new way of expression, discourse, poetic sensitivity and themes in the 1940’s.
