Abstract

This paper problematizes aesthetics in theatre translation. Aesthetics, formerly a branch of philosophy, is increasingly used as a new perspective referring to a more specified territory in social sciences dealing with human production and consumption in arts. The relation of aesthetics with theatre translation in terms of its artistic nature is analysed through repertoire and archive terms. Although the aesthetic perspective introduced in the study is applicable to existing translation products and processes, the study rather concentrates on non-translation. It focuses on the constraints of translation, and addresses aesthetics as one of these constraints in non-translation. The case analysed in the study is the translations of plays written by Tom Stoppard, who is hailed as a modern classic by theatre communities worldwide since 1970s. Stoppard is introduced to Turkish theatrical system relatively later as he was first staged in 1990 (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead), and first published in 2000 in translation. This study aims to analyse this delay and nontranslation in general, using possible questions on aesthetics with a sociological perspective.
