Abstract
In order to describe and record time, human beings have observed what is going on around them, divide natural events into slices with simple systems and make them measurable with periods such as days, weeks, months and years. Mankind has benefited from the vital events around it in the matter of how to initiate these periods and how to create a recording system on them. Animals and plants mean different degrees, especially for Turkish tribes, and play a very important role in their daily lives. Animals and plants, which constitute the most perfect and strongest basic source of life, are at the origin of all humanity and are not considered separately from human beings, have always been at the forefront and have been the basic image of life as an example, a symbol, a cult, and the expression of existence. Turkish society, which is so close to animals, has established a relationship between the concept of time and animals and created the twelve-slice system. He thought of a calendar consisting of twelve zones and developed an understanding of time that identifies the concept of time with animals. Each year of this calendar, which runs every twelve years, is named after a certain animal, and it is believed that the characteristics of that animal affect the year in which its name is given. When the twelve animal cycle is completed, the same sequence begins again. Many legends and variants of the "Turkish Calendar with Twelve Animals" in Kazakhstan have been compiled and published. There are texts in these publications and the beliefs about the year names draw attention. The animals that give their names to the twelve years are divided into two groups as "halal" and "haram" animals. It is believed that the years bearing the names of haram animals are unlucky, full of famines and disasters, and years bearing the names of halal animals will bring peace and abundance. Kazakhs born in the year of the Pig hide the name of this animal and when asked about the year of birth, say "Black Deer". In addition, they do not kill or slaughter an animal belonging to the year it was born. Kazakhs living in the Altai region also believe that the "bay" (sheep) year is the most fertile year. The year of the horse, the year of the dragon and the year of the monkey are also fertile. The years of the rabbit, snake, rat, and pig are years of famine and disaster. In the study, information about the Turkish Calendar with 12 Animals in Kazakh culture was given and determinations were made on the animal cult through the legend texts.
