Abstract

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate reliability of Lovett, Kendall and modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) manual muscle testing methods in children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Material and Methods: Twenty children with diagnosis of DMD were included in the study. Posture analysis, range of motion, muscle shortness and timed function tests were evaluated. Children were evaluated with three different manual muscle testing methods (Lovett, Kendall and mMRC) by three physiotherapists. Results: Inter-reviewer reliability in total muscle scores were found to be ICC: 0.93 in Kendall method, ICC: 0.92 in mMRC method, and ICC: 0.86 in Lovett method. Conclusion: This study showed that none of these three muscle strength measurement methods had superiority over the others. For reliable results, the DMD patients must be followed both with the same physiotherapist and test in the clinic.
