Abstract

The financial stress index, which reaches a single value by evaluating various indicators related to financial markets such as interest rates, yield spreads, and stock market indices, tries to measure pressure in the financial markets and allows investors, policy makers, and researchers to assess financial market conditions. The aim of this paper is to analyze the causality relationship between the financial stress index and selected indicators related to macroeconomic performance for Turkey over the period of 2007:01-2021:01. In order to test the impact of the financial stress index on macroeconomic indicators, we employ the Fourier causality test developed by Enders and Jones (2016) and the Fourier Toda Yamamoto causality test suggested by Nazlioglu et al. (2016). Our findings support the evidence of short-term impact of the financial stress index on the industrial production index, unemployment rate, reel sector confidence index and central bank reserves. On the other hand, we could not find any causality relationship from the financial stress index to the real effective rate and inflation rate.
