Abstract
Interchangable usage of case suffixes is a known feature of Turkish from the Old Turkish period. There could be several reasons for it. Suffixes’ having close morphological and functional features, continuity of some archaic structures, system of verbs and formation of suffixes might be the leading reasons. It is also known that the reasons might stem from some other individual usages. +DAn ablative suffix is known to be used in different periods of Turkish language and Turkey Turkish dialects with locative and instrumental function. +DAn ablative suffix is used rarely for other cases while it is used frequently for locative and instrumental case. This fact indicates that these sort of usages are not incidental or individual. Most of the views about the structure of +DAn ablative suffix support that the suffix is a compound suffix and is a combination of +DA (locative) and +n (instrumental) suffix. Suffix’s locative and instrumental function could be related to that structure. This finding constitutes the starting point of this study. In this article, whether there is a relation between the structure and functions of +DAn that is used for locative and instrumental case in different periods of Turkish will be examined.
