Abstract
Objective: Losartan has been reported to reduce osteoclastogenesis and increase osteoblastactivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of systemic losartan application on titaniumimplant osseointegration. Materials and Methods: Titanium implants were surgically integrated in the tibial bones of rats, after which the rats were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (n=10) and a losartantreatment group (n=10). No other treatment was applied to the controls, whereas losartan wasadministered to the treatment group in a dosage of 30 mg/kg by oral gavage with saline solutionthree times per week during an eight-week experimental period. After the experimental period, titanium implants were collected with the surrounding bone tissues and fixed. Non-decalcifiedhistological analyses of implants and surrounding bone tissue were performed. The bone implantconnection ratio (%) of each implant was calculated as the ratio of the length of the implantcircumference to the circumference of the total implant in direct contact with the bone. The bone filling ratio (%) was determined by the ratio of bone-filled areas within the region to the total area ofthe region, including the area 0.5 mm from the titanium implant in periimplant bone. Results: Although the bone implant connection and bone-filling ratios (%) ratios were higher in thelosartan group than in the controls, there was no statistically significant difference in the ratiosbetween the two groups (P>0.05).Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, losartan increased the osseointegration levelsnumerically but not statistically.
