Abstract

In this study, the use of sugar beet pulp carbon (ŞPKK) in the adsorption of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions have been investigated. The adsorption yield of the ŞPKK samples obtained at different conditions decreased with increasing the temperature of carbonisation. The most effective removal (% 65.3) was provided by ŞPKK samples obtained by carbonising sugar beet pulp at 300 °C for two hours. The equilibrium time for the adsorption process of Cd(II) ions was 150 min. Although the removal yield of Cd(II) ions was, to a large extent, dependent on the pH of solution, optimum pH for the process was determined as 6.3. Equilibrium data were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms equations. The constants calculated from isotherm equations showed that the adsorption yield of Cd(II) ions increased with a rise in the temperature of the solutions. The results related to the adsorption process of Cd(II) ions by sugar beet pulp carbons (ŞPKK) obtained at different temperatures were fitted to the first and second order rate expressions to calculate adsorption rate constants. These results are obeyed to the second order rate expression better than the first order rate expression.
