Abstract

In this study, the usability of the pumice of Elazığ Region as a pozzolanic additive in concrete was investigated. After the pumice was ground up for hydration reaction and new mixtures were produced by replacing pumice with cement 5%, 10%,15 % and 20% in weight. To investigate the contribution of the silica fume to the compressive strength, a second series was prepared by adding 10% silica fume in weight to all concrete series except for the control concrete. To determine the effect of the pumice on the compressive strength with respect to the cure age, compressive strengths of the samples were recorded at the 3, 7, 28 and 90-day cure ages. In addition, porosity and ultrasonic pulse velocity test experiments were carried out with the concrete samples at the 28-day cure age. As a result, pumice addition up to 20% by weight of the cement was decreased compressive strength due to diminish the quantity of the cement. However the amount of the decreasing on the compressive strength was decreased with increasing cure ages. This is because of the pozzolanic activity of the pumice in increasing cure ages. The decreasing on the compressive strength especially in early cure ages was prevented by adding 10% silica fume by weight of cement, which effects early strength of concrete positively. The addition of silica fume was increased the compressive strength.
