Abstract
Thomas Kuhn, through his theory of paradigms, seems to be the first figure to point out that science has no fixed origin or an absolute purpose and an accumulative development towards that purpose. This allows us to consider Kuhn, who profaned the science freeing it from transcendency that idealism dragged it into, as a thief of fire vis-à-vis tradition, just like Prometheus. However, the idea that the development of thought can only be observed in models that can be evaluated through their own internal relations did not arise with Kuhn. In this study, it will be showed that there are two other thieves who had fanned the flame of Kuhn’s model theory in the field of science. It can be said that David Hume was the first thief of fire, who guided the development of the model theory by opposing ideas such as the first cause and final cause, and by demonstrating that a genuine metaphysics can only be created from impressions and the relationship between these impressions. Another thief is Ferdinand de Saussure, the silent revolutionary of the 20th century. Saussure, as well as emphasizing the arbitrary nature of the sign, demonstrated that language is a system of values and the invariance of the sign applies only for certain models. Thus, this silent revolutionary appears as the main figure, who carried the fire to the model theory, or more generally, to the structuralist revolution that would later shine with Kuhn in the field of science.
