Abstract

In this study, the views of Thomas Kuhn and Rudolf Carnap on the idea of scientific revolution will be discussed within the frameworks of their arguments. Firstly, for Kuhn the scientific revolution requires the concepts of paradigm and incommensurability, while according to Carnap, the scientific revolution corresponds to the linguistic framework for every scientific theory which determines the definitions and relations of objects. However, since Carnap considers scientific theories to be incommensurable with each other, instead of viewing the selection process between theories logically, he bases them on purely pragmatic conditions. This study will answer the following questions respectively within a general and concise framework: (1) Do Kuhn and Carnap use scientific term concept to refer to the same meaning? (2) Or does the concept of Scientific Revolution which appears in both of their philosophy have quite different meaning for each of them? (3) If the concept of scientific revolution in question is understood differently to each of them, how is it possible to intersect the ideas of Kuhn and Carnap? The main purpose of this paper is to discuss and elaborate on whether Kuhn’s and Carnap’s conceptualizations can be coincided with each other, despite their different denominations.
