Abstract

This article explores in a critical manner the view of spatiality Martin Heidegger propound in Being and Time. Heidegger, in Being and Time (§§ 22- 24), propounds a view of space based on a perception of place belonging to everyday experience, one which systematically excludes the empty and homogenous space. This approach, essentially thinks of space in terms of world as a referential system. According to this, space as conceived and presupposed by science and mathematics as well as by many of the philosophical theories, from Descartes to Kant, is simply an artificial construct. As opposed to this, space in Heidegger’s sense, that is, space as place, is grounded in human existence with all its dimensions, in its practical character, in the phenomenon of “being-in-the-world”. Dasein’s spatiality is one of the primordial structures of Dasein’s being. Notwithstanding this idea of space based on concrete experience, Heidegger, interestingly enough, ignores the role body plays in the constitution and creation of space. Husserl, by contrast, exclusively focuses on the crucial function of body when he conceptualizes the spatiality of human being.
