Abstract

The topic of this paper is the content and the method of the moral education which is given with the religious education under the same title. On this context, the nature of the thorny relation between ethics and religion is a significant problem to be solved. The shared aim of moral and religious education is growing the good/ideal human being. The good human being is mostly regarded as a good citizen but the qualities differ according to the society and to the era. For example in our country, starting from Tanzimat reform era, there is an evolution from pan Islamic morality to national morality and from secularmorality to universal morality. Consequently, in parallelism to these changes we witness changes in the content of moral education. However, the principal problem encounters us with regard to the method. The reason is that ethic courses in secondary education, because of the religious courses added to it under the ideal of good human being, have been given for a long time in classical methodical patterns under the title of Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge. What is more, ethics courses cover only ten percentage of the education program. In some periods in history ethic and religious courses are not combined under one title, rather ethic courses, especially moral philosophy courses, are seen as the alternatives of or rivals to the religious courses. Moral philosophy is mostly regarded as a profession which makes local morals and religious beliefs suspicious or at least weakened. Now in this paper a general evaluation on with which motives, according to which program and method moral education is given will be provided. On this context, the nature of the rela-tion between morality and religion, its reflection in educational programs and the method of communicating moral and religious values to students will be tried to be demonstrated.
