The Attitudes of Fifth Graders Towards the Science Course in Terms of Gender and Achievement

Özet

Bu araştırmanın amacı, ilköğretim 5. sınıf öğrencilerinin Fen Bilgisi dersine yönelik tutumlarını belirlemek; cinsiyet ve başarının tutumlarına etkisini incelemektir. Araştırma, ilköğretim 5. sınıfa devam eden 1042 öğrenci üzerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu araştırmada, veriler araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen Fen Bilgisi Dersine Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği ile toplanmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular, öğrencilerin Fen Bilgisi dersine yönelik tutumlarının genelde olumlu olduğunu, erkek ve kız öğrenciler arasında tutum açısından önemli fark olmadığını ve başarılarının tutumlarını etkilediğini ortaya koymuştur. Bulgular, başarının kız öğrencilerin fen alanında çalışmayı sürdürmeyi istemesinde belirleyici bir etken olmadığını ve kız öğrencilerin erkeklere göre fen alanında çalışmayı sürdürmede isteksiz olduğunu da ortaya koymuştur.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study the attitudes of fifth graders towards the Science course and effects of gender and achievement on their attitudes. The research was conducted on 1042 fifth graders at elementary schools. The data were collected with the Scale of Attitudes Towards the Science Course, developed by the researcher. The findings have discerned that the attitude of students towards the Science course is positive in general, that the attitudes do not vary significantly in terms of gender; their achievements are affecting the attitudes. The findings have proved that achievement is not a remarkable factor for girls to desire to continue further studies in the field of science, and that girls are less eager than boys to continue further studies in the field of science.
