Abstract
Problem Statement: There are studies, which show the effectiveness of wellness programs, applied during adolescence and youth (Peterson, 1996; Askegaard, 2000; Williams, Kolar, Reger & Pearson, 2001). However, in order to develop wellness programs, it is needed to understand the variables related to wellness among university students. Purpose: Thus, the primary objective of this study is to determine whether there is significant difference between gender, friendship with opposite sex, frequency of exercise, level of family support and support from friends and “Friendship” and “Love” subscales of wellness among university students or not. Methods: The study sample consists of 936 (623 female, 313 male) students from Baskent and Hacettepe University. “The Wellness Evaluation of Lifestyle”, the “Perceived Social Support Scale”, and “Personal Information Form” were used for data collection. The Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used in the analysis of the data. The sources of the differences were further analyzed with the Tukey Test. Results: The results of the study indicated that female students got significantly higher scores from “Friendship” and “Love” subscales than male students. Results also revealed that the students who have an opposite sex friend gots significantly higher scores from ”Love” subscale than the students who do not have an opposite sex friend. Results also indicated that the students who had high frequency of physical exercise had significantly higher scores from “Love” subscale than the students who had low frequency of physical exercise. The results showed that the students who had high social support from family and friends got significantly higher scores from “Friendship”, and “Love” subscales than the students who had low social support from family and friends. Conclusion: The following suggestions are recommended based on the results of this study. First, social skills programs, which would emphasize the importance of friendship and emotional expression, could be initiated for male students. In addition, psycho-educational programs could be conducted in order to strengthen social relationships and friendship and to encourage students to establish and sustain healthy relationships with the opposite sex. Physical exercise opportunities could be improved for university students. Finally, educational programs with an emphasis on the importance of social support could be organized for those students who do not have enough support from friends and family.
