English Language Proficiency and Academic Attainment

Özet

İlişkisel tarama modeli niteliğindeki bu araştırma ile Hacettepe Üniversitesi İngilizce Tıp Bölümü ve İngilizce İktisat Bölümü 1. sınıf öğrencilerinin akademik başarılarının, İngilizce dil yeterliliği (dinleme, konuşma, okuma, yazma) ve dilbilgisi (kuralları bilgisi) sınavları puanları ile olan ilişkisi eşzamanlı olarak incelenmiştir. Bu desende, İngilizce dil yeterliliği sabit- lendiğinde, dilbilgisi kuralları bilgisinin akademik başarı ile ilişkisinin olup olmadığının saptanması da amaçlanmıştır. Öğretim elemanları ve öğrenci- lere uygulanan anketler aracılığı ile öğrenme ve öğretme süreçlerinin öz- gün koşulları belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar doğrultu- sunda, H. Ü. Yabancı Diller Yüksek Okulunda, daha etkin İngilizce eğitim programlarının tasarlanması konusunda öneriler getirilmiştir.

Abstract

This correlational case study aims at concurrently examining to what extend academic attainment is related to aspects of English language proficiency (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and knowledge of the rules of grammar in the departments of medicine and economics where the medium of instruction is English at Hacettepe University. It also establishes the degree of association between the academic success and knowledge of the rules of grammar nullifying the effects of General English Language Proficiency. The data collected from the students and the lecturers through questionnaires are used to explain the unique features of learning/teaching situations. Using the findings, suggestions are put forward as to the targets to design more effective curricula in the School of Foreign Languages.
