Abstract
Some words and expressions of the Qur’an are used out of their real meanings. Therefore, a word or expression can sometimes have more than one explanation. One of these words, which is called tenevvu’ in the Ulumu’l-Qur’an literature and is seen as a richness of meaning, is the concept of prayer. In this article, the literal and metaphorical uses of the word “prayer” are examined through the 77th verses of surah al-Furqan and the 60th verses of surah of al-Mu’min. The concept of “prayer” in the 77th verse of the surah of al-Furqan has the meanings of faith, worship, demand and invitation. Based on the opinions of the commentators, it has been determined that the meaning of prayer with a metaphorical use is the foreground. On the other hand, even if the word prayer in the 60th verse of surah of al- Mu’min has the meaning of worship, it has been seen that the real meaning of demand and invocation was found to be more pronounced. Although one view is preferred in the interpretation of these verses, it is emphasized that it is possible to adopt other views. It has been stated that the situation in question is a fundamental attitude in our tradition of tafsir and it has been shown that that is inaccurate to describe it as falsification.
