Abstract

This study deals with the issue of “darb” (bea ting) mentioned in Surah Nisa’ verse 34 in termsof address. The interpretations of this verse fromthe early period to the present have been madewith the idea that the verse addresses husbands. That is why they interpreted the problem of be ting issue on the grounds that the husband has theauthority to put a coup on women. Accordingly, three main approaches have emerged in the in terpretation of the word “beating”. Classical ap proach, historicist approach and modern appro ach. According to the classical approach, whennecessary, a woman can be beaten by her husbandlightly. According to the historicist approach, sin ce the society was patriarchal at the time of theQuran, it was not a problem for the husband tobeat his wife traditionally. But this provision doesnot apply today, as such a tradition is not validtoday. According to modern approaches, the word“beating” in the verse does not mean hitting orpound. Thus, this study claims that the verse wasaddressed to the rulers regarding the beating, andtherefore the husband did not have the authorityto beating women.
