Abstract
Inclusion of the Armenian question in the international political sphere starting with the year 1878 intensified the activities of the Armenian community towards separation from the Ottoman Empire and establishment of an independent state. With the support provided by Western countries, Armenians started to carry out their nationalist acts in a broad area including educational institutions. Among the lead actors of the expansion and prevalence of these acts that would in time turn into rebellion by transitioning from idea to action were teachers. Both domestic and foreign teachers who worked at Armenian schools took on a significant role in the establishment of a sense of nationalism among Armenians by the corruptive and prohibited publications they used in their classes. The Ottoman state attempted to take Armenian teachers under its control by applying harsh and dissuasive criminal precautions for the educators that included such publications at their schools. It inflicted a strict process of proceedings and monitoring on teachers that were expelled from the profession. Despite these, it is understood from the archived documents that, in the period where Armenian rebellions started to occur in the late 19th century, Armenian teachers took part in various criminal activities in a way that was more intense in comparison to previous periods. Thus, the intervention and proceedings that were attempted by the Ottoman state was not successful in changing the missions of teachers as active members of the Armenian rebellion events.
