Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in Erzincan Tulum Cheese produced and sold in Erzincan city by conventional and molecular methods. For this purpose, 100 Tulum Cheese samples were used as material. The isolation of Listeria spp. was carried out by using ISO 11290-1/A1-2004 method. The genus and species level identification of Listeria spp. isolates were performed by Polimerase Chain Reaction using specific primers in iap and listeriolysine gene region, respectively. In the light of the research results, 3% of the analyzed Tulum Cheese samples were found as Listeria spp. positive and all of these isolates were identified as L. monocytogenes by using PCR. In this work, the existence of L. monocytogenes were determined in Erzincan Tulum Cheese which had high consumption potential in Erzincan territory. Therefore, it is concluded that the consumption of the contaminated Tulum Cheese can generate risk for public health.
