Abstract
Purpose: In the present study, we aimed at determining whether serum and erythrocyte adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity could be a marker for cancer; the levels of some biochemical parameters along with ADA activity were also detected. Material and methods: ADA activities in serum and erythrocytes together with serum aspartate aminotransferase( AST), total protein and albumin were determined in 20 cancer patients and also in the control group which consisted of 42 healthy subjects. Results: Although the serum ADA activity of the cancer patients (23.0±6.7 U/L) was significantly higher (%34) than that of the control group (66.7± 17.8 U/L), erythrocyte ADA activity (68.6±23.3 nmol/h/mg Hb) was not significantly different from the controls (65.9±17.7 nmol/h/mg Hb). Serum total protein (6.8±0.7 g/dl) and albumin (3.6±0.6 g/dl) levels of cancer patients were lower and AST activity (34.9±14.4 U/L) was higher than those of the control group with a statistical significance (p
