Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the body composition mean values of healthy and normal weight adult men and women, and to find out if there were any differences between their measured and calculated basal metabolic rates. Twenty six women (W) and 17 men, total 43 adult subjects who admitted to our Endocrinology Department without any endocrinologic and/or metabolic disturbances were taken into the study. In addition to the measurements of weight, height, waist and hip circumferences of the subjects, body composition analyses were performed with a Bioelectrical Impedance Analyser (BIA). Body mass index (BMI) were calculated according to the given formula as weight (kg)/height2 (m2), and only normal weight subjects according to BMI were taken into the study. Basal metabolic rates (BMR) of the subjects were found either measuring directly by BIA, or calculated by adjusting the Harris Benedict (HB) equation. Findings of the study were statistically analysed at a computer programme with t test. Althought both men and women were in the same BMI group, there were significant differences between their body compositions given as percent of body water, fat and lean (p
