Abstract
In order to provide the students with the scientific process skills, which are called the skills used by scientists to examine nature, it is necessary to teach scientific thinking starting from the elementary school level. Therefore, it was aimed to determine the scientific process skill levels of elementary school students and to examine them in terms of different variables. In the research designed with descriptive survey method, the study group consisted of 1133 4th grade students (540 girls, 593 boys) studying in the elementary schools of Aksaray in the second semester of the academic year 2017-2018. In order to collect data, Scientific processs kills test developed by Smith and Welliver (1994) and adapted to Turkish by Başdağ and Güneş (2006) was used. In the test consisting of 40 questions, 13 scientific process skills were observed. The reliability coefficient of the test was found as 0.81. As a result of the arithmetic mean total score was found to be 23,87. As a result of the evaluation of the test results according to gender, a significant difference was found in terms of observation, classification, inference, estimation, recording of data, establishing number-space relation, making experiments, determining variables, interpreting data and functional definition. There is a significant difference in favor of laboratory users in terms of observation skills. According to the experiment, a significant difference was found in favor of the experimenters in terms of classification, estimation, number-space relation and interpretation of data. There is a significant difference in terms of the ability to classify in favor of outside course interested in science. In order to improve students' scientific process skill levels, activities and student participation in science courses should be increased.
