Abstract

Communication is very important in organizations as in social life. In general, communication is divided into two as formal and informal. Informal communication occurs as a result of interaction by employees of the organization. This type of communication has positive as well as negative characteristics. In this study, it was aimed to develop a scale in order to determine the usage levels and types of informal communication and to determine the positive and negative effects of informal communication in the schools in secondary education institutions. The developed scale was applied to a total of 1268 people (n1 = 970, n2 = 298). After the frequency and mode values of the responses were determined with the data of the first group, exploratory factor analysis was performed. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, it was determined that the scale consists of 23 items and five factors. The reliability coefficients of the subscales of the scale were varied between .58. and .82. The findings showed that the scale was a tool for determining type and level of use of informal communication in schools and producing valid and reliable measurements in determining their positive and negative results.
