Abstract
This study aims to determine students levels of understandingthe concept of ecosystem and its elements. Data were collectedfrom 47 seventh grade students attending 3 different middleschools via the worksheets entitled Let s Create Our OwnEcosystem , which was developed by the researchers. Thecollected data were analyzed through t he rubric developed by theresearchers. The research results indicate that studentsunderstand the concept of ecosystem partially, and that althoughthey are aware of the elements of ecosystem individually, theyhave limited cognition of and some misconceptions regarding thefunctions of these elements as well as their interactions with oneanother. To get rid of these problems, students should be made tocomprehend that the ecosystem is a dynamic system, and that anychange in one of its elements affects t he entire system.Relationships between these elements should be presented tostudents on the basis of cause and effect relationships byproviding concrete examples from the daily life .
