The Relationship Between Social Uprising and Economic Indicators: The Case of Turkey

Özet

Dünyanın çeşitli ülkelerinde ortaya çıkan toplumsal başkaldırılar farklı gerekçelerle ortaya çıkmakta ve sınıfsal olarak farklı bileşenleri içermektedir. Bu nedenle, değişik ülkelerde ortaya çıkan her bir toplumsal başkaldırı hareketinin detaylı olarak incelenmesi gerekmektedir. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’de 2013 Mayıs Ayı sonunda ortaya çıkan “Gezi Direnişi” için çoklukla ileri sürülen “hayat tarzına müdahale” gerekçesinin ötesine geçerek, bu direnişin altında yatan olası iktisadi unsurlar belirlenmek ve analiz etmek amaçlanmıştır. Sonuç olarak, iktisadi göstergelerin başkaldırılarda etkili olduğu ancak iktisadi olanın siyasal, toplumsal ve kültürel olan ile ayrılmaz bir bütün oluşturduğu vurgulanmıştır.

Abstract

Social uprisings in countries all over the World arise from the different causes and their actorsbelong to different class background. Therefore, each social uprising movements should beexamined carefully for each country in detail. In this study, it is aimed to determine and toanalyse the possible economic causes underlying this resistance which started at the end of May2013, going beyond the argument of the interventions to life-styles of people which is generallyargued as the main reason of Gezi resistance. As a result, although economic indicators areimportant in uprisings, it is also emphasized that political, social and cultural factors are integral parts of economic factors.the the point of view of Turkey because of the Gezi resistance.
