Özet
Modern sanayi kentinin yükseldiği on dokuzuncu yüzyılda toplumsal kuram, Batı’dakapitalizmin doğurduğu ekonomik, toplumsal ve politik sorunlara yoğunlaşmıştır.
Abstract
In the nineteenth century, when the modern industrial city rose, social theory concentrated on the economic, social and political problems that posed by capitalism in the industrialised West. In parallel with the growing industries, the population of pre-existing large cities’ increased incrementally with masses flowing from rural to urban areas. On the other hand, towns near the coalfields, ports and raw materials run up rapidly with new factories. Rapid growth of cities’ physically and demographically, becoming cities’ a vital catalyst of economic action and becoming the stage of social change, problems and conflicts leads to emergence of thoughts on urban morphology, economy, and life from the second half of the nineteenth century. This enormous transformation prompted to social theorists’ interest to the city. But it should be stated that this interest did not include an effort on to theorise to city or a direct analyse of the city itself. They made an effort on to understand and explain the context that gave rise and institutionalise the capitalism, nature of the new industrial society and its concomitant problems. Weber has dwelt on the institutional and ideological basis that found modern Western society and industrial capitalism over the Occidental city from the dissolution of feudalism. Marx and Engels have explained the conditions, phases and actors that historically arose out of the capitalism, asserted the disappearance of rural-urban divide in favour of the city, and manifested the social and economic conflicts of capitalist organisation or bourgeois order in new industrial cities. Tönnies, Durkheim and Simmel have focused on the issues like division of labour, specialisation, social change, daily life, problems and organization of the society in modern industrial city, metropolis. Although these founder figures have not directly examined the city itself as a primary subject of analyse, their thoughts and studies on city has been an inspiration and reference to urban theorists of twentieth century.
