Abstract
Objective: We aim to investigate the breastfeeding self-efficacy levels of primiparous mothers by their type of delivery and breastfeeding-related characteristics. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted in a Training and Research Hospital in Istanbul between December 2016 – August 2017. The study sample included 320 mothers. The data were obtained via face-to-face interviews in the first 24 hours and via telephone interviews on the 15th day using “Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form” and the “Introductory Information Form” prepared by the researchers. Results: The mean age of the mothers who participated in the study was 23.99 ± 3.85 and 52.2% of them were middle school graduates and 65% of them did not work. The 24th-hour and 15th-day mean scores of breastfeeding self-efficacy scale did not show any statistically significant difference by their age, education and working status (p>0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between the mothers’ first time to take the baby on their lap, the first breastfeeding after birth, the frequency of breastfeeding in the first 24 hours, the status of witnessing breastfeeding and the Breastfeeding SelfEfficacy Scale scores at 24 hours and 15 days (p< 0.05). Mothers who had vaginal and caesarean births were found to have low levels of breastfeeding self-efficacy in the first 24 hours after birth compared to the measurements performed on the 15th day, and the difference was statistically significant (p
