Abstract

Aim: This study aims to analyze domestic violence from children’s perspective. Materials and Method: The study sample consisted of 5th grade students in a primary school in Narlidere, Izmir. The data were collected via a two-part questionnaire form which was developed by Satı Demir and chi-square test and percentile calculations were used for the assessment of the data. Results: Sixty per cent of the children who participated in the study were girls. Eighty percent of the participant families were nuclear families and 60% of the mothers and 40% of the fathers were primary school graduates. Among the participant parents, 36% of all mothers and 32% of all fathers admitted that they practice violence on their own children. Besides, it was found that in 24% of the families in the study, mothers are subjected to domestic violence by their husbands. Forty-six percent of all girls and 20% of all boys in the study were reported to be physically abused by their mothers. Conclusion: We found in our study that girls are more likely to be subjected to domestic violence when compared to boys. It was also found that parents with low educational and social status are more apt to practice violence, and that mothers who are the victims of domestic violence will be more prone to practice violence on their own children. In the light of the results of our study, all students in the school and their parents were instructed about anger management, empathy development, “me and you” language, communication with children, and characteristics of school-age children.
