Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the position of women and the representation of social gender roles in literature by focusing on the relations between social gender and literature. In the literarure review, how women are represented in male-dominated literature and whether there is differentiation in this regard from Tanzimat to our present day were identified as the main problematics of the study. The main axis of the innovation and modernization movements, which started with Tanzimat Period and continued with the Republic Period in Turkey, was formed with the change and transformation of women. Literature is the reflection of social reality, and also guides social phenomena.Literary texts provide important data to understand the change in the position of women in terms of social gender. The rights given to women in the historical process, such as the choice of education and spouse increased the visibility of women in the society, which was also reflected in novels and stories. In the present study, the representation of women in novels and stories since Tanzimat Period to our present day was examined under three headings by considering the periodizations of history of literarture researchers. The first part covers the Tanzimat Period, the second part covers Early Republic and National Struggle Period, and the third part covers the Post-Republican Period. The authors and the works that reflected the social life of each period revealing the visibility of social gender were preferred in the selection of the authors and texts to be included in the sampling. In this context, the literature on novels and stories of male and female authors in the historical period since Ahmet Mithat Efendi to Sebahattin Ali, Halide Edip to Elif Shafak was evaluated for the purpose and subject of the study. According to the results of the study, it was found that, on the one hand, the rights given to women since Tanzimat Period to our present day were instrumentalized to fulfill the roles of wife and motherhood best, which were considered as the basic duties of women, and on the other hand, additional responsibilities and sacrifices were placed on women who acquired a new “citizen” identity. The study revealed that social, political and cultural changes and transformations during the modernization process did not make a difference in social gender roles and attitudes of women in novels and stories as reflected in literature, and women are not in a better position as “represented”.
