Abstract
Shallow earthquakes with surface wave magnitudes greater than 4.0 occurred in the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East are investigated to determine the changes of stress drop in terms of fracture mechanisms. The catalogue used in this study covers data for the period 1939-1996 and consists of 412 earthquakes of which body wave magnitudes ($m_b$), surface wave magnitudes ($M_s$), seismic moment ($M_0$) and fault plane solutions are known. Simple and complex earthquakes are statistically classified taking into account $m_b$ and $M_s$ magnitudes. It is found that complex earthquakes are generally related to strike-slip faults, and simple earthquakes to normal and reverse faults. Assessment of stress drop for different fault types is based on the information of $M_s$ and $M_0$. An avarage stress drop estimated for complex earthquakes is about eight times greater than that obtained simple earthqukes. Avarage stress drops of normal and reverse faults are approximately equal whereas the avarage stress drop of strike-slip faults is twice as high as the other fault types.
