Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the values of quantitative bone scintigraphy with markers of bone formation in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods: Thirty-seven women patients (mean age 57.49±4.28) suffering from postmenopausal osteoporosis were included in this study. The values of osteocalcin, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, type I procollagen propeptide were measured as markers of bone formation in all subjects. In addition this, bone scintigraphy was performed in all subjects and regions of interest were outlined over the posterior images of the right distal femoral epiphyse and right femoral diaphyse. The average number of counts per pixel in each regions of interest determined. An uptake ratio of the distal femoral epiphyse to femoral diaphyse was calculated. This scintigraphic ratio was termed as E/D index. We calculated the E/D index for all subjects. The correlation between biochemical markers of bone formation and the values of E/D index in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis was investigated. Results: The value of the mean E/D index was found as 1.46±0.24. There was meaningful correlation between markers of bone formation and the values of E/D index (p < 0.01). The most meaningful correlation was obtained between E/D index and bone alkaline phosphatase. Conclusions: Our results suggest that E/D index may provide information about bone formation. This issue should be evaluated with another studies too.
