Abstract
This study was conducted on the spraymen working in the Adana municipality mosquito control team. Residual spraymen using back pumpes applied organophosphorus insecticide (OP) such as Temephos (Temequard 50 EC), but others which used thermal fog-Cold aerosol ULV sprayers applied synthetic pyrethroids such as Cypermethrin (Cyper 10 EC), Cyphenothrin (Gokill 5 EC) and Deltamethrin+S-Bioalletrin (K-Othrine). It is known that if the insecticides were applied according to the given instructions than they are not toxic. We understood from the questionnaire that most of the workers did not obey to the instructions. So we tried to measure the toxic effects of the insecticides by examining the level of cholinesterase (ChE) enzyme and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) activity. Two groups were chosen for this study: 1. Same group of spraymen (10 Thermal fog-Cold aerosol ULV spraymen, 8 Residual spraymen) were chosen to examine the parameter before and after spraying. 2. Different groups of spraymen were chosen for examination before and after spraying and compared with controls (30 Thermal fog-Cold aerosol ULV spraymen, 20 Residual spraymen, 13 Control). It was found that the level of ChE activity decreased after the application of the insecticide in both groups of spraymen but this decrease was not significant (p>0.05). It was also found that the sister chromatid exchange activity increased after the application of the insecticides in all spraymen of the 1st group comparing with levels before the insecticide application. Again the level of the SCE activity increased in all spraymen of the 2nd group the increase was not significant (p>0.05). The first group of spraymen was little effected from the OP insecticide through the level of ChE because the insecticide used as larvicide and applied to the damp and wet basement of the buildings. The partial increase in the SCE of the second group may be due to the mazout used as solvent for the insecticide.
