Abstract
In order to compare the effect of alendronate versus etidronate in postmenopausal osteoporosis we have given these drugs to randomized selected 74 postmenopausal patients for one year. The first group, which consisted of 37 patients received alendronate 10mg/day and calcium 500mg/day for one year. The second group consisted of 37 patients, too, received etidronate 400mg/day for the1-14 days and calcium 500mg/day for the 15-91 days as to the cyclical intermittent etidronate protocol. The patients in the second group received etidronate for four cycles in one year. The bone mineral density for the lumbospinal and femur region was measured with the DEXA method in each patient in the beginning, in the sixth month of therapy and at the end of the study. The bone mineral density increased in each group with variable degrees. Our results show that these drugs are useful in the treatment of osteoporosis, but they do not show any significant advantage to each other.
