Abstract

Underground economy serves as a secondary economy which is not recorded in statistics. This situation provides insights which are of crucial importance for the theory of economic fluctuations, which is directly related to economic policies. To this end, in the study the unreported economy of Turkey has been predicted using simple currency ratio method and the relationship between the standard business cycle and the unreported economy has been investigated on the grounds of economic fluctuations. The findings demonstrate that the underground economy is relatively unstable, both the legitimate and the unreported economy indicate procycle relationship, and the direction of causality is from measured economy to “hidden” output.
