Abstract
In this study, ‘nafs al-amr’ view of ṬāshkoprīzādaAḥmadAfandi (ö.968/1561), one of the most important figures in the history of Ottoman thought, was examined. In the introduction part, the informations about the meaning of the concept and the history of the discussions within the framework of the concept was given. In the analysis section, the external existence, the mental existence, and how they are related to the nafs al-amr were explained; and the results of Ṭāshkoprīzāda were revealed. Ṭāshkoprīzāda’s main study on the issue is in his independent work called Risālat al-Shuhūd alʿAynī fī Mabāḥith al-Wujūd al-Ẕihnī. On the other hand, in ḤāshiyaalâḤāshiyat al-Sayyid al-Sharīf alâSharḥ al-Tajrīd, there are important data about our subject of study. Nafs al amr is used in the sense of 'something itself'. While the word “Amr” means something, “nafs” means the essence of this thing. In this sense, it is possible to say the existence of something in itself for nafs al amr. The existence of a thing in itself, its realization and its being in itself and not based on the assumption of any hypothetical. At the root of the problem is the human effort to explain the existing reality. Man needs representations, concepts and models to explain the existing reality. When examining the relationship between the human mind and reality, three elements should be taken into account. These are the outer world, the mind, and the realm of truth. The field of truth can be called nafs al amr. The ontological aspect of Nafs al amr is to be taken in the sense of the place where existence is based. Its epistemological aspect is that it can reach certain meanings that are or are not in the outside world through abstraction and fiction. The article reached three main conclusions: (1) Ṭāshkoprīzāda’s views on nafs al-amr carry the traces of previous debates, but contain original contributions. (2) According to Ṭāshkoprīzāda, (a) Nafs alamr is a field of existence and knowledge that is free from assumptions expressing the agreement between phenomenon and reality. (b) ‘Al-amr’ in the composition of nafs al-amr are the quiddities; “nafs” is the state and concomitants of quiddities. (c) External, mind and nafs al-amr are different to things in terms of agreement and scope. External refers to the existence of something outside the mind. The mind produces knowledge by abstracting from the external and relying on its own forms. The hypothetical dimension of the mind makes it more general from the external, just as its judgments cannot agree with what is external. Nafs al-amr, on the other hand, is the field of correct judgments in which the quiddity of the external thing fully corresponds. For this reason, it includes the external and is narrow-scoped from the mind. (d) Nafs al-amr takes place in the active intellect, but it is some, not all, of the quiddities in the active intellect. These quiddities are also found in the mind as provisions that agree with things. (3) It is still early to draw the framework of the nafs al-amr discussions in Islamic thought, and this topic needs intense academic attention.
