Abstract

In order to determine the changes in complete blood count following immunization with live attenuated vaccine, 14 healthy, nonanemic infants aged 9-11 months for live measles vaccine, and 15 healthy, nonanemic children aged 14-20 months for measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine were enrolled in the study. On admission, 9-14 days and 30-42 days after vaccination, the complete blood counts of all children were evaluated. After both measles and MMR vaccinations, the mean hemoglobin and hemotocrit values decreased significantly within 9-14 days. Nine of the 14 cases (64%) in the measles vaccine group and six of the 15 cases (40%) in the MMR group had hemoglobin values less than 11 g/dl on days 9-14. No changes were detected in the mean values of mean corpuscular volume (MCV), red cell distribution width (RDW) or erythrocyte, leukocyte and lymphocyte counts during the study period. Also, a significant decrease in the thrombocyte count was observed on days 9-14 following both vaccinations. Therefore, in children aged 9-14 months who have low hemoglobin values, a history of measles or MMR vaccinations within the last month should be noted.
