Abstract
In this study, mechanical properties such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and static elastic modulus of concretes with different types of Turkish cements produced according to EN 197-1 were investigated experimentally. A total of eight different cement types such as portland cement (PC 42.5), sulfate resisting cement (SDC 32.5), portland composite cements (PKÇ/A42.5R, PKÇ/B 42.5, PKÇ/B 32.5R-a, and PKÇ/B 32.5R-b), composite cement (KZC/A 42.5), and blast furnace slag cement (CC 42.5) were used in the production of normal and high strength concretes. Thus, sixteen different concrete mixtures having water cement ratios of 0.45 and 0.65 were prepared. After casting, specimens were subjected to three different curing conditions. In the first curing condition, the specimens were kept continuously in air till the time of testing (uncontrolled relative humidity and temperature). In the second curing condition, the specimens were kept in 20 ± 2 0C water for 1 week and then they were transferred to the curing room at 20 ± 2 0C and 50 ± 5 % relative humidity until the time of testing (controlled relative humidity and temperature). In the third curing condition, the specimens were stored in 20 ± 2 0C water after demoulding till the time of testing (standard curing condition). Mechanical behavior of the concrete specimens were studied at the ages of 28, 90, and 180 days. Test results indicated that cement type, water cement ratio, procedure and duration of curing had significant effect on the mechanical properties of concretes. For both water cement ratios, the concretes with blended cements had mostly lower 28 day compressive strength as compared to plain cement concretes. However, this trend was reversed as the age of concrete increased. The results also showed that for both water cement ratios, the splitting tensile strength of both the plain and blended cement concretes subjected to the standard water curingwas higher than that of the concretes subjected to the uncontrolled or controlled curing conditions. Moreover, it was observed that similar to the variation in compressive strength of the concretes, the elastic modulus of the concretes increased with decreasing water cement ratio, and improved the curing.
