Abstract
(Alişanzâde) İsmail Hakkı (1871-1944), who is mentioned in the transition process called Ara Nesil (Intermediate Generation) in Turkish literature; he is known as a poet, biographer, translator, researcher and bureaucrat. İsmail Hakkı positioned himself in the Hamit-Ekrem-Sezai school among the different fronts seen during the transition period from the Tanzimat to Servet-i Fünûn. In addition to being the defender of Mahmut Ekrem's thoughts on poetry, Recaizade also produced works that would set an example for new poetry. Although his literary activities did not last long, he contributed to Turkish poetry gaining a Western identity with his translations from French poetry, his biographies, journalism activities and literature research. İsmail Hakkı, who started his literary life with the poems he wrote in his youth, collected the products of this period in his work called Tahassür (1308/1891). Tahassür consists of sentimental poems, some of which were previously published in the Mekteb journal, some of which were translated and almost entirely written in the style of Recaizade Ekrem. Another striking aspect of the work is that it contains a long poetics in which thoughts about poetry are conveyed. In this section, he put forward theses that will strengthen Ekrem's views on the definition of poetry, its subject, beauty, nature, truth, and how a new poem should be. The poems in which nature, love and melancholy dominate are presented as examples of new poetry in the line of Recaizade Ekrem. In this study, the biography and literary portrait of İsmail Hakkı, the analysis of his thoughts on poetry and the analysis of the texts in Tahassür in the context of new Turkish poetry have been tried to be done.
