Abstract

Concrete pipes are commonly used for transporting water and wastewater. Waters and wastewaters give various materials in different kinds and concentrations, as sources. It is known that the waters which have different kind and concentration of materials effect concrete pipes and reduced their usage life. It is necessary to now the effect of materials in water and manufacture suitable pipes for increasing the usage life of concrete pipes. In this study, the effect of various concentrations of sulphate, carbon dioxide and ammonium(in liquid) to concrete pipes (diameter=0.15m) has been investigated for three months. Pipes have been manufactured with Portland cement. The peak pressure load and infiltration experiments of pipes have been done. The results have been showed that sulphate concentrations over 750 mg/1 rapidly reduced the breaking pressure of pipes (resistance loss of 33 %) and sulphate concentration of 2250 mg/l ($MgSO_4$)reduced the resistance of pipe below minimum breaking pressure. The breaking pressure loss has been 36% for 100 mg/l $CO_2$/L and the pressure of peak load has been decreased below minimum breaking load. The resistance loss for the pipes kept in water that has ammonium ($(NH_4)H_2PO_4$ solution) concentrations over 50 mg/L has been 29 %. The results of infiltration experiment have been in limits of TS 821 Standards.
