Abstract
In this study, the nitrogen removal performance of the horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland system was investigated for biologically treated tannery effluent. A pilot reed bed plant was constructed to evaluate COD, NH4-N, PO4-P and total chromium removal efficiencies in tannery effluent. The main goal of this study was to reduce the ammonium nitrogen concentration in biologically treated tannery effluent. Typha domingensis and Phragmites australis were selected as reed types for evaluations. The reed bed system was worked in batch and continuous mode. The effect of design, hyraulic retention time and inlet NH4-N concentrations of the system on the removal of COD, NH4-N, PO4-P, TSS and total chromium was investigated. The treatment performances of Typha domingensis and Phragmites australis were compared with each others. The remqval efficiencies of the horizontal subsurface flow reed bed planted with Typha domingensis which operated continuously at different hydraulic retention times, 31 %for COD, 50 %for NH4-N, 83 %for PO4-P, 55 %for Cr and 32 %for $S^-$ were achieved. During the batch operation of the reed bed system, the removal efficiencies of NH4-N and PO4-P increased with increasing the batch period while COD removal efficiencies decreased. The highest removal efficiencies were achieved at batch period of 14 days such as 82 %for NH4-N and 83 %for PO4-P. The removal efficiencies of the horizontal subsurface flow compartmentalized reed bed planted with Phragmites australis were approximately 30 %for COD, over 95 %for NH4-N, in the reed bed operated continuously at optimum hydraulic retention time of 8 days. The reed bed system provided good treatment performance at high ammonium-nitrogen loadings. The removal efficiencies of the system at hydraulic retention time of 7 days and initial 20 mg/L NH -N concentration, were almost 99 %for NH4-N and 40 %for COD.
