Abstract

We prospectively studied 98 patients who had the diagnosis of solid mass in the breast on physical examination and ultrasonographic examination in a time period of January 1997-March 1999. One hundred and one needle core biopsies of the breast were performed with the use of the tru-cut disposable needle during this period. The results of needle core biopsies performed prior to open biopsy or surgery were compared with the postoperative pathologic examination of the specimens. There were no false positive diagnosis. The sensitivity, specifity, positive predictive value of test (+), negative predictive value of a test (-) and accuracy rate of this procedure are % 83, % 100, % 100, % 85, % 91 respectively. These result are similar to the results that exist in the literature. The needle core biopsy, when performed and evaluated by experienced clinician and pathologist is a cheap and easy alternative to the open biopsy in the breast. We believe that it will also save many patients from undergoing unnecessary operations.
