Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the importance of thrombocytopenia as an earlier marker of severity of the underlying sepsis. Between 1998 and 2001, all postoperative patients diagnosed with the sepsis syndrome with or without thrombocytopenia, and thrombocytopenic patients without sepsis were retrospectively analysed in the study. Incidence of sepsis and thrombocytopenia, risk factors for thrombocytopenia, or death rate in thrombocytopenic patients were identified in postoperative patients. Sepsis occurred in 24 (I %j patients with a mortality rate of 79 %. Severe thrombocytopenia (platelet count
