Abstract

The increase in the areas of use makes the energy element one of the requirements of growth and development. Electricity is at the forefront of energy sources, because of their advantages in use and their environmental impacts are less than other energy sources. Many empirical studies have been carried out to examine the relationship between electricity consumption, which draw attention with these characteristics, and economic growth. In this study, the relationship between electricity consumption and economic growth in the BRICS countries, which attracted attention with their recent economic growth rates and development potentials, was investigated. The panel VECM causality test result, which was carried out on annual data from 1990 to 2014, proves a relation of causality from electricity consumption to GDP in short term and from GDP to electricity consumption in long term.
