Abstract
In this study which uses TIMSS-2015 of Turkey and Germany data, it is aimed to examine the effect of participation in professional development activities of primary school teachers on 4th-grade students’ academic achievements of math and science. Out of quantitative research models, a correlational survey model is used. In this study, secondary data from the TIMSS-2015 is analyzed. A number of 12071 4th grade students participated in TIMSS-2015 uses a two-phase stratified sampling model is the sampling of the study. The data of the study is obtained from the website of the International Association for the Evaluation of Education Achievement, IEA. In analyzing the obtained data, t-test and Multilevel Structural Equation Modeling are used. According to the results, in Turkey, it can be said that there is no statistically significant difference between the mathematics and science scores of the students of the teachers who participated and did not participate in the professional development activities. The effect size was found to be significantly lower in the groups with statistically significant differences between the mathematics and science scores of the students of the teachers who participated and did not participate in professional development activities, in Germany. In addition, it can be said that the participation of teachers in professional development activities is not a factor affecting the mathematics and science achievement of 4th-grade students statistically significantly. Suggestions were made based on the results of the study.
