Abstract
After the World War II, Turkey s foreign policy was mainly shaped within theframework of diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union has a greateffect on Turkey s rapprochement with the United States of America from 1945onward. It could be stressed that the Soviet threat concerning especially the Straits andeastern frontiers right after the war fueled Turkey s journey towards west and theUnited States. On the other hand, this one-way journey partially restricted Turkey sforeign policy in terms of having multiple alternatives. Turning towards the West, reaches back to the establishment of the Turkish Republic, became the only choice andgathered speed at this era. Thus, Turkish Republic s moderate relationships with SovietUnion, in 1920 s and 1930 s, until the Second World War has been interrupted duringthe rearrangement on the post war foreign policy. This new situation posed threats forthe Turkish governments through prospective and unpredictable external threats. Thisstudy focuses on the nature of the Soviet threat that pushed Turkey to look for reliableallies following the World War II.
