Abstract

The change of power experienced with the military intervention of May 27, 1960, Turkey, the new constitution and the changes experienced in economy has revealed important results in the context of social dynamics. With the effect of industrialization, an increase has been observed in the migration of the rural population to the cities as from the 1950s; as a result, the population in big cities has grown rapidly and squatting has started. Therefore, the first city problem caused by the migration movements in Turkey was observed in the housing field. In the 1950s, those who migrated to big cities initially built small houses away from the center, which could be considered as makeshift. After the 1960s, the settlements, which had the appearance of a neighborhood, have become areas where village life style was maintained in cities. Considering the internal migration, the main factors that attract the population to cities are the fact that the institutions, which provide job opportunities are mostly located in or around the cities; the earnings are higher than the villages; the dynamism of city life; the relative superiority of opportunities such as education, entertainment and health. The first of the economic problems caused by internal migration is the fact that the population migrating to the city is higher than the job opportunities created during the industrialization process and that the unemployment rate in the cities is constantly increasing. In the examples discussed throughout the study, the cultural conflicts that immigrants encountered in big cities, the differences between social classes are explained with the main figures and symbols. On the other hand, from 1961 until the 1970s when recruitment was terminated, nearly 1 million Turkish workers have worked abroad. It is observed that films and plastic art examples that put external migration on its main axis and problematize it have started to increase as from the 1970s. All these changes and transformations have influenced the visual culture, and phenomena such as migration, daily life in slums, external migration have entered the subject repertoire of fields such as cinema and painting. Within the scope of this study, effects of these phenomena on the films of directors such as Ertem Goreç, Halit Refiğ, Duygu Sağıroğlu, Ömer Lütfi Akad, Türkan Şoray and Tunç Okan and the productions of artists such as Nedim Günsür, Nuri İyem, Hanefi Yeter, Nil Yalter, Gülsün Karamustafa between 1960 and 1980 will be examined.
