Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare thecorrosion resistance of castable and fabrication magneticattachments systems used in prosthetic rehabilitation.Material and Methods: For corrosion test, castablemagnetic attachments containing 39.5% platinum, 59.75%iron and 0.75% niobyum by weight and fabricatedmagnetic attachment system, Hilop, with neodymium, ironand boron content were immersed in 1% lactic acid and0,9% NaCI for 14 days (n:8). The released iron, platinum, neodimyum, boron and niobyum ions in the solutions fromthe samples were examined by inductively coupled plasmamass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) methods. Results: Iron was found the highest released element intothe both solutions for all attachment systems and causingcorrosion. In addition, castable magnetic attachmentsystem was found to be the most resistant to corrosion inboth environments. Conclusion: Coating with stainless steel makes thefabricated magnetic attachment system resistant tocorrosion, but the high platinum content made the castablemagnets more resistant to corrosion.
