Abstract

SUMMARY. Emotional and organic effects including surgical trauma threaten the integrity of the human organism and produce stress leading to neural, endocrin, metabolic and humoral responses and changes. In our work, we have aimed and planned to investigate the variations and the relations of hormones (endocrin response), trace elements and electrolytes (metabolic response) as a result of an organic stress by surgery. In 30 surgical cases, 24 hours and just before operation (AI and All periods, respectively), just after and 24 hours following the operation (BI and BII periods respectively), venous blood samples were collected. In all the samples; adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, renin, aldosteron, magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), sodium (Na), potassium (K) and chloride (Cl) levels were measured. It was observed that hormone levels began to increase in the AII period and they were found to be highest in the postoperative period (BI) compared to the others. When we examined the statistical significance of the data between the perioperative periods (All and BI), ACTH (p
