Abstract
Recent evidences suggest that the selection of an antibiotic for the treatment of an infection should take into account not only the drug's antimicrobial activity but also the way by which it interacts with the host defence mechanisms, since this may influence the response to infection. In this study, we investigated the in vitro effects of İmipenem cylastatin sodium on the adhesion activities of human leucocytes, phagocytosis, intracellular killing and lymphocytotoxicity with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC). Ten healthy people, 5 female and 5 male aged between 18 and 32, participated in this study. Imipenem cylastatin sodium potantiated the activity of phagocytosis, intracellular killing and adhesion at both MIC and MBC, and increased lymphocytotoxicity at MIC but not MBC. These findings suggest that İmipenem cylastatin sodium has some positive modulating effects on immune system.
